Step into the role of a forest steward during The Biochar & Benevolence Session of farm camp. Mornings are dedicated to the soulful work of the farm, where campers engage in daily chores and animal husbandry—connecting with our livestock and learning the responsibility of what it takes to raise animals. The focus of this week’s adventure takes place in our woodlands, where we focus on forest floor restoration while simultaneously creating a permanent foundation of fertility in the soil. Campers will lead a "clean forest" initiative, gathering fallen branches and twigs to transform them into biochar. Using DIY biochar tin-can retorts they build themselves, students will witness the science of pyrolysis firsthand, turning wood waste into a stable, carbon-negative soil amendment. By the end of the week, your camper won’t just have cleaned a forest; they will have learned a climate-smart technology that provides beneficial, lasting results for the earth.
